“Dune” is an epic space opera set in a world created by Frank Herbert with the harsh and dry desert terrain of Arrakis, famously known as the only planet where spice is mined, a substance which allows longer life and powers of perception. The action unfolds from the position of Paul Atreides, a young nobleman whose family becomes a victim of treachery and political “games”, prophecies and war are hurled at him. As Paul adapts to the cold and harsh conditions and the foreign ways of the Arrakis’ indigenous Fremen people, he discovers within himself a messiah waiting to emerge.
While dominating Herbert’s Dune literary universe one agrees with his attitude towards self and societal issues; ecology, religion, ruling and preserving all beings alive. The introductory sections of the book are dominated by intrigue, political battles and even mysticism without being mere space fantasies. The deep and gripping comprehension of conflict and space interaction makes Dune one of the keystones of science fiction writing, which is despised by even those who have never read it since it’s likely them mistaking it as one of those corny scifi movies.
